The electronic cigarette industry has exploded in the last couple of years.  Hundreds of companies have emerged onto the world wide web as well as many retail locations popping up all over the United States. Anyone interested in trying electronic cigarettes is bound to be so overwhelmed with information about all the different models, mods, accessories, liquids, etc, that they might be discouraged to even attempt to buy one.

In a previous blog, I outline some guidelines to help in choosing a good model type for your current smoking habit, but I always like to keep abreast of new items coming to market.

Recently a company called Bloog has sprung onto the scene. Within a few short months, their following rapidly reached near cult status.  I was intrigued by this as the model that they sell is a KR808D-1 cartomizer unit.  While I am a huge fan of cartomizers (a disposable combination atomizer and cartridge), I've found that most of those currently on the market were of substandard quality and not satisfying to heavy smokers.

Always one to shop around, I checked out some other reviews of the product and was shocked to see well respected reviews praising this little unit.  Most experienced vapers eventually move on to large battery mods, high output atomizers, and large capacity tanks.  To see them impressed by an 808 model was pretty astounding.

So I bit the bullet and ordered one for myself.  I have to say, this thing rocks!  Although I use larger battery mods as I was a heavy smoker, I'm getting pretty decent life from the batteries and I really like the style of the charging case.  I mainly use the passthrough that came with my kit as I am near a USB power source most of the time.

What really sold me on this company, however was their cartomizers.  I've tried many, many, MANY different 808 cartomizers and very few were worth the box they came in.  These cartomizers provide an amazing amount of vapor, great throat hit and seem to last quite a bit longer than ones I've tried before. As with all cartomizers, these are disposable but can be refilled quite a few times before they lose functionality.

I never thought I'd see the day when I could recommend one company with only one model to any new user and feel comfortable knowing they will be satisfied.  But from my experience, I believe that the Bloog Maxx Fusion is probably the best starter model on the market.  It's ease of use (screw on a cartomizer and vape), high quality standards, and really good flavors make this somewhat of a no-brainer to me.

From what I understand, the company has been going through some growing pains.  They ran into a stock issue due to larger than expected demand and as a result, ended up with some customer service issues.  They appear to have sorted out the problems.  They've hired additional employees and have new stock on the way.  The buzz is that they will also soon be carrying their own liquids in bottles to refill the cartomizers.

How to choose the right electronic cigarette.

Choosing an electronic cigarette is rather like choosing a new car.  There are many different models that each have their good and bad points. Some people do fine with a compact, fuel efficient car...while others need a 350 diesel dually with a tow bar and ladder rack.

Personally, I have about 10 different models of electronic cigarettes as I had a very heavy smoking habit and was harder to satisfy, but because of my experience, I'm often able to help point people in the right direction to save them time and money on their choices.

When choosing an electronic cigarette, you need to take a couple factors into consideration.  They are as follows:

1. How much do you currently smoke per day?
2. Are you on the go alot or do you spend most of your time at home or in an office?
3. How important is the appearance of the unit? ie, do you want it to look like a cigarette?
4. Price vs convenience.

I'll cover each of these in more detail.

How much do you currently smoke per day?

This question is the first one I ask anyone interested in electronic cigarettes and here's why: Electronic cigarettes are NOT a one-size-fits-all product.  There are many models on the market with different features that should be customized to your smoking habit. 

For instance...

• A 1/2 a pack per day smoker will do just fine with a mini ecig such as the Volcano or Blucig.
• A pack per day smoker can use pretty much any model out there depending on the other critera mentioned above.  Generally a standard 510 model (I recommend Liberty Flights for their Joye 510 - enter "clt" as a coupon code for a 10%discount) or a KR808D-1 (DEFINIATELY go with the Vaporking from Vapor4life.  It's the one that finally got me off cigarettes for good)  are good fits for this level of smoking habit.
• A 2+ pack per day smoker is going to need an electronic cigarette with some oomph.  Speaking from experience, a mini ecig or single battery starter kit probably will become more of a frustration than a relief.  Those models tend to have shorter battery life and smaller cartridges that will require frequent refilling.  For smokers at this level I'd recommend a model with either a personal charging case available or extended life batteries, such as the Riva also from Liberty Flights (coupon code "clt" for 10%discount).

Are you on the go alot or do you spend most of your time at home or in an office?

If you have a very active lifestyle, travel a lot or spend a lot of time driving, you want to make sure that the model you choose either has a long battery life or portable charging options.  If you are at home or in an office where charging is readily available, this is not quite so important.  If you spend a lot of time on a computer, consider a model that offers a usb passthrough to save on batteries.

How important is the appearance of the unit? ie, do you want it to look like a cigarette?

Most new users that I come across, especially those of an older generation want their electronic cigarette to look and act as much like a tobacco cigarette as possible.  However, the models that do tend to look just like a real cigarette fall in the category of being suitable for lighter smokers.  Frequently when heavier smokers go this route the end up upgrading to a better suited model later on and give up asthetics for function.  Take this into consideration before choosing.  If you're trying to quit smoking, there is no point in pretending that it's still a cigarette.

Price vs convenience.

There are a few things to consider here.

• If you have a physical disability or issue such as arthritis, you may want to choose a model that uses cartomizers instead of standard atomizers with cartridges.  Cartomizers are considered disposable, but can be refilled several times before they need to be disposed of.  They are easier to manage if handling small objects is difficult for you.
• If there is a store in your area, you might pay a bit more for a unit than you would ordering it online, however you can get better customer service face to face in most cases and there is no shipping charge or wait time.
• And once again, I need to mention functionality.  If you wish to use an electronic cigarette to wean off of nicotine by slowly reducing the strength of your eliquid and then stop using it altogether, you'll want to go with the least expensive option that fits your habit.  On the other hand, if you have no desire to quit and wish to continue using electronic cigarettes recreationally, you might want to look into a model that has more options and accessories that can grow with you over time.  These will generally cost more, but will save you money in the long run as you won't need to keep buying new models.

What is an electronic cigarette?

An electronic cigarette, for those who haven't yet heard of them, is a battery operated device that heats a nicotine or non nicotine liquid into a vapor.

The unit allows for the hand to mouth, inhaling and exhaling actions of smoking and looks quite similiar.  However, electronic cigarettes contain no tar, carcinogens or other toxic chemicals.  Most liquids or cartridges contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, nicotine (generally less than 4% per solution), distilled water and kosher food flavorings, tobacco flavoring or menthol flavoring.

The majority of smokers who switch to electronic cigarettes experience the same health benefits of quitting smoking, without the severe withdrawal symptoms or stress. 

There has been a lot of controversy around these amazing little devices, but despite that they are growing in popularity at a rate that boggles the mind.

A Win for Electronic Cigarettes!

It's been a long battle over the past year between the FDA and the electronic cigarette industry.  Last fall, the FDA started seizing shipments to NJOY and Smoking Everywhere.  The companies filed for an injuction to stop the seizures, which was granted.  But the FDA appealed.

The FDA had been trying to have electronic cigarettes classified as an unapproved drug delivery device, but justice has prevailed and the courts decided that the electronic cigarettes are to fall under the same guidelines as tobacco cigarettes.

Although many in the electronic cigarette industry do not agree that these should be classified as tobacco as they contain no tobacco, this ruling does protect the industry from the units being banned.  They can now be regulated by the FDA, but that will take awhile for it to go into affect.

Regulation will likely raise the cost of electronic cigarettes, but they will undoubtedly still be much less expensive than smoking.
